I had originally listed her place of birth as Ozieri, but the Nughedu civic rolls confirm her birth there on 4 June 1890. The entry states that [[Giovanni Maria (Giomaria) Ruffinu]] reported that the birth of Antonia took place in the house on Sant' Antonio belonging to his wife [[Pietruccia Lai]]. An Antonio Puddinu witnessed.

According to the story of a distant cousin, Joelle Ballonzoli, Antonia, while still in Ozieri, played a key role in arranging the marriage of her cousin, [[Salvatore Mandras (b. 1884)]].
  
 
Antonia appears in the ship manifest of the Duca degli Abruzzi departing from Genoa and arriving at Ellis Island on December 2, 1920. She traveled with her husband Matteo and his two children. These entries can be found via a search for "Antonia Raffin" (sic!) or "Maria Meloni." My notes also show that Antonia and Matteo had a daughter who died on the ship.

Matteo Lai, his sons Giovanni and Mattia, and Maria Meloni are also on this manifest. Nugheddu S. Nicolo is given as the birth-place of both Antonia and her step-children, as well as Maria. All are listed as going to stay with [[Giovanni Ruffini]], spelled Ruffinu. Antonia and both of her children list G Maria Ruffinu as their next of kin, living in Nughedu.

JLR says that he does not remember when she died, although he remembers her quite well: "I remember when her husband died, I remember going up to her at the funeral parlor and saying, "Coraggio, zia," to her, which got my mother's approval. I do remember her quite a bit, how she looked, her house and all... I guess I was still living at home when he died and not when she died. Also, we all probably got estranged. I don't remember any of this, but Louie would. My aunt became quite blind and I don't know how she managed after he died. She had the son, Johnny, and there was Matia, but of course, both of them were her stepchildren, and she hadn't treated them well. All very sad." Luigi was an adult when she died, but does not remember more specifically either. He says he may have been in his 30s. She was diabetic. (My notes indicate that her death may have been in Alameda in 1972, but this does not square with these accounts, and needs to be verified.)
