James Davis was born in the District of Columbia c. 1805. An ancestry.com family tree posted by Mary Palmquist gives his father's name as William Davis, born Wales, 1784; this is based on reported correspondence with other descendants.

General Notes

Thomas: Joseph T.’s death certificate gives the name "Thomas" rather than "James", perhaps simply because Joseph T.'s son was mistaken in his report.

Birth-place: Given as the District of Columbia in Joseph T.’s 1900 census entry.

Research Notes: His birth-state comes from Joseph T. Davis’s death certificate.

Marriages

James married Unknown Female Davis. This is presumably not the woman he marries in 1844.

The children from this marriage were:

Thomas Davis;

Sarah A. Davis;

Joseph T. Davis.

In 1844, he marries a Euphemia (Ufuma) (Wilson) Furnish. Two members of the Furnish family, perhaps her earlier children, live with them in the 1850 census. In the 1850 federal census, James and his family are living in Howard, Missouri, and he is described as a 45-year-old blacksmith.

Chronology

1860: James Davis appears in Glasgow, Howard, Missouri, with Euphemia et al., but not Joseph T. Davis.

1870: He still lives in Glasgow, Howard, Missouri.

1880: He and Euphemia live in Hamburg, Fremont, Iowa, which is also where his son Joseph T. Davis lives, as does his daughter Izetta and her husband Goodwin George.

1885: He and Euphemia live in Richardson, Nebraska, according to the state census of that year. The birth-place of both of his parents is given as Pennsylvania.
